Frequently asked questions.

What is a Bernedoodle?

A Bernedoodle is a crossbreed between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They are known for their friendly nature, intelligence, and hypoallergenic coat.

What sizes do Bernedoodles come in?

Bernedoodles can come in various sizes, including standard, mini, and toy. The size of the Bernedoodle can depend on the size of the Poodle parent used in the breeding process. At Lazy Acres Bernedoodles, we have a miniature poodle in our program that weighs 12 lbs and our female Bernese Mountain Dogs are 75 lbs. Since both parents are small, our F1 mini Bernedoodles are on the smaller end of a mini and range from 20-45 lbs and averaging at 30 lbs.

Why would you choose a bernedoodle over a Bernese Mountain Dog?

Bernedoodles offer the best qualities of a Bernese Mountain Dog but in a small package, without the shedding and with a longer lifespan. The average lifespan of a Bernese Mountain Dog is 6-8 years, while a Bernedoodle is 12-16 years.

Are Bernedoodles hypoallergenic?

Yes, F1 Bernedoodles are born with the wavy coat associated with a doodle that is low to non-shedding. Their coat is considered hypoallergenic. However, it is important to note that individual allergic reactions may vary.

What is the typical temperament of a Bernedoodle?

Bernedoodles are known for being friendly, social, and affectionate. They tend to get along well with children and other pets, making them great family companions. Here at Lazy Acres Bernedoodles, we chose our parents based on their chill and loving temperament, making them especially great family dogs.

How much exercise do Bernedoodles require?

Bernedoodles are moderately active dogs and require regular exercise to keep them happy and healthy. Daily walks, playtime, and mental stimulation are recommended. However, your Bernedoodle will love hanging with you to snuggle anytime.

Do Bernedoodles require regular grooming?

Yes, Bernedoodles have a wavy or curly coat that requires regular grooming to prevent matting and keep it looking its best. Regular brushing, professional grooming, and occasional trims are necessary.

What health issues are common in Bernedoodles?

While Bernedoodles are generally healthy dogs, they can be prone to certain health issues such as hip dysplasia, eye problems, and certain genetic conditions. This is why at Lazy Acres Bernedoodles, we test our breeding parents for breed specific genetic conditions and hip displasia to ensure the healthiest puppies. In addition, we breed F1, or first generation, Bernedoodles because they are the healthiest generation. The first generation of two purebred dogs is considered to have “hybrid vigor”. This is where the strongest genes from each purebred line are expressed in the first generation cross. This breeding philosophy is also used in farm animals to ensure the healthiest and most resilient offspring.

Do you do any puppy training?

At Lazy Acres Bernedoodles we go the extra mile to ensure the optimal development and resilience of our puppies. We provide Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) and Early Scent Introduction (ESI) training to aid their growth and well-being. ENS involves exposing the puppies to mild stresses in a controlled manner, which has been observed to offer several benefits. These include improved cardiovascular performance, stronger heartbeats, enhanced adrenal gland function, increased tolerance to stress, and greater resistance to disease.

ESI, on the other hand, introduces puppies to various scents at an early age, stimulating their neurological system and promoting their overall development. By implementing ENS and ESI training, we aim to produce the healthiest and most resilient Bernedoodle puppies possible. These techniques are commonly used in the training of service, therapy, and military dogs, and we believe they contribute to the long-term well-being and adaptability of our puppies.

Why would I invest in a Lazy Acres Bernedoodle over buying another dog?

Investing in a Lazy Acres Bernedoodle offers a unique combination of desirable traits. Our dogs are not just pets; they're integral members of our family. This close-knit upbringing results in minimal behavioral issues, making them an ideal choice for families and first-time dog owners. Our commitment to genetic and health testing ensures that your furry friend is free from breed-related diseases, potentially saving you on future vet bills. Moreover, our dogs enjoy a top-notch, nutritious diet, guaranteeing a healthy start for your new companion. Choosing a Bernedoodle isn't just acquiring a dog; it's gaining a loving, well-cared-for family member with a foundation for a happy and healthy life.

How much does a Lazy Acres Bernedoodle cost?

A Lazy Acres Bernedoodle costs $3,500. We view the purchase of your puppy as an investment in a healthy dog that is screened for genetic diseases, socialized and trained from the day it was born under our ENS and ESI service dog curriculum.

How many puppies are in a litter?

There are 5-10 puppies in each litter and we have two litters per year between our two moms. This means there are only 10-20 puppies available per year. We keep this number low to ensure our dogs have plenty of room to run and play and aren’t overstressed. Many of our puppies are already reserved, so make sure to secure your spot on our adopt page.

How can I reserve a puppy?

To reserve a Bernedoodle puppy, please follow the instructions provided on our adopt page, which includes contacting us, completing the Puppy Application Form, and submitting a non-refundable deposit.
